Its main use is in cooking, where its high\u00a0smoke point makes it a valuable\u00a0frying oil. It is also a key ingredient in some\u00a0margarines. Corn oil has a milder taste and is less expensive than most other types of\u00a0vegetable oils.<\/p>\n<p>One\u00a0bushel of corn contains 1.55\u00a0pounds of corn oil (28\u00a0kg\/\u00a0Mg). Corn\u00a0agronomists have developed high-oil varieties, however, these varieties tend to show lower field yields, so they are not universally accepted by growers. Refined corn oil is 99%\u00a0triglyceride, with proportions of approximately 59% polyunsaturated\u00a0<a title=\"Fatty acid\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cs.mcgill.ca\/~rwest\/wikispeedia\/wpcd\/wp\/f\/Fatty_acid.htm\">fatty acid<\/a>, 24% monounsaturated fatty acid, and 13% saturated fatty acid.<\/p>\n<p>Corn oil is also one source of\u00a0biodiesel. Biodiesel is commonly made from\u00a0soybeans, but as corn oil refining technology improves, it will become a greater source of biodiesel and a backup source in case of large-scale soybean crop failures. Other industrial uses for corn oil include\u00a0soap,\u00a0salve,\u00a0paint,\u00a0rustproofing for metal surfaces,\u00a0inks,\u00a0<a title=\"Textile\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cs.mcgill.ca\/~rwest\/wikispeedia\/wpcd\/wp\/t\/Textile.htm\">textiles<\/a>, and\u00a0insecticides.
